A past participle is a word derived from a verb that can be used as an adjective, to form the passive voice, and to form perfect verb tenses.

How to Form the Past Participle

1. Regular verbs

For regular verbs, we usually add -ed.

Past Participle in Perfect Tenses

We use have / has + past participle to talk about past actions connected to the present.

Past Participle in Passive Sentences

Past participles are also used in the passive voice.

Structure: be + past participle

Examples:

  • The door is closed.

  • The cake was made yesterday.

  • The emails were sent this morning.

Past Participle as an Adjective

Sometimes a past participle describes a noun.

Examples:

  • a broken window

  • a painted wall

  • a lost phone

Example sentences:

  • He fixed the broken bike.
