Past Simple vs Past Continuous - Exercises and Quiz

These exercises focus on using Past Simple and Past Continuous for actions happening in the past.

Past Simple

Use Past Simple for a short, finished action in the past.

Examples:

  • I missed the bus yesterday.

  • She opened the window.

  • We visited our grandparents last weekend.

It often answers the question: What happened?

Past Continuous

Use Past Continuous for an action that was happening at a certain time in the past.

Structure: was / were + verb-ing

Examples:

  • I was waiting at the station at 6 p.m.

  • She was washing the dishes.

  • They were playing outside.

It often answers the question: What was happening?

Main Difference

1. Past Simple = completed action

  • He called me.

  • The lesson started at 9.

2. Past Continuous = action in progress

Long Action + Short Action

A very common pattern is: Past Continuous + when + Past Simple

Use Past Continuous for the longer action. Use Past Simple for the short action that interrupts it.

Examples:

  • I was taking a shower when the phone rang.

  • They were walking home when it started to snow.

  • She was studying when her friend sent a message.

Two Actions at the Same Time

Use Past Continuous for two actions happening at the same time.

Examples:

  • I was making dinner while my brother was setting the table.

  • The children were drawing while their mother was talking on the phone.

Actions in Order

Use Past Simple for actions that happened one after another.

Examples:

  • I got up, made breakfast, and left the house.

  • He found his keys, opened the door, and went inside.
