Irregular Verbs

Irregular verbs are verbs that don’t follow the standard rule of adding -ed to form the past tense and past participle. Instead, they change in different ways or stay the same across tenses.

Important Things to Remember

1. Irregular verbs do not follow one rule. You cannot just add -ed.

Incorrect:

  • go → goed

  • eat → eated

Correct:

  • go → went

  • eat → ate

2. Some irregular verbs stay the same

Examples:

  • cut → cut

  • put → put

  • hit → hit

Sentences:

  • She cut the paper.

  • I put my bag on the chair.

3. Some verbs have the same past and past participle

Examples:

  • buy → bought → bought

  • have → had → had

  • make → made → made

This can make them easier to learn.
