Reporting Verbs

Reporting verbs are verbs we use to report what someone said, asked, or did. They help us make indirect speech sound more accurate, polite, or expressive. Instead of repeating exact words, we use a reporting verb to show the speaker’s attitude (agree, advise, promise, deny, etc.).

Explanation

1. What are reporting verbs?

Common reporting verbs include:

  • say, tell

  • explain, mention, add

  • promise, advise, warn

  • suggest, recommend

  • ask, wonder

  • deny, admit

  • complain, insist

These verbs help us show how the person spoke or why they spoke.

  • He denied taking the keys.

  • They promised to help us later.

Examples:

  • Mark agreed to help with the project.

  • She refused to lend me her phone.

  • They promised to arrive on time.

You can often use that after these verbs, but -ing is more natural.
