Modal Verb Should

We use should to give advice, make suggestions, or say what is right or expected. It’s not a rule, only what we think is the best thing to do.

Giving Advice

Use should when you tell someone what you think is a good idea.

Examples:
You should get more sleep.

He should take an umbrella — it might rain.
They should be more careful with their money.

Making Suggestions

Use should when you want to share an idea or plan.

Examples:
We should watch that new movie tonight.

You should join us for dinner.
She should try the blue dress — it looks nice on her.

Saying What’s Right or Expected

Use should for things that are correct or normally happen.

Examples:
The shop should open at 8 a.m.

Students should be respectful to teachers.
People should recycle more.

Negative Form

should not = shouldn’t

We use it to say that something is not a good idea.

Examples:
You shouldn’t eat too late at night.

He shouldn’t spend all his money on games.
We shouldn’t waste water.

Questions with “Should”

We use should in questions to ask for advice or opinion.

Examples:
Should I tell him the truth?

Should we take a taxi or walk?
