This, that, these, and those are demonstratives. We use them to point to people or things.

They show:

  • distance (near or far)

  • number (one or more)

Explanation


1. This

Use this for one thing that is near you.

Structure: this + singular noun

Examples:

  • This bag is very heavy.

  • This restaurant is great.

  • This is my seat.


2. These

Use these for more than one thing near you.

Structure: these + plural noun

Examples:

  • These shoes are new.

  • These cookies taste good.

  • These are my keys.


3. That

Use that for one thing far from you.

Structure: that + singular noun

Examples:

  • That building is very tall.

  • That bike belongs to my brother.

  • That is my favorite song.


4. Those

Use those for more than one thing far from you.

Structure: those + plural noun

Examples:

  • Those mountains are beautiful.

  • Those chairs are broken.

  • Those are my classmates.


5. Demonstratives Without a Noun

We can also use them alone.

Examples:

  • This is delicious.

  • That looks interesting.

  • These are expensive.

  • Those were amazing.
