How to Use Possessive Adjectives
1. They come before a noun
Possessive adjectives are always used before the noun they describe.
Examples:
-
I forgot my keys.
-
She is calling her brother.
-
They cleaned their apartment.
2. They show ownership
Possessive adjectives tell us who owns something.
Examples:
-
John is washing his car.
-
Maria is reading her book.
-
We invited friends to our party.
3. They match the person, not the object
The possessive adjective matches the owner, not the object.
Example:
-
Anna has a dog. Her dog is very playful.
(Not: its dog)
Important Note: its vs it’s
-
its → possessive adjective
-
it’s → means it is
Examples:
-
The bird is building its nest.
-
It’s very cold today.
