How to Use Possessive Adjectives

1. They come before a noun

Possessive adjectives are always used before the noun they describe.

Examples:

  • I forgot my keys.

  • She is calling her brother.

  • They cleaned their apartment.

2. They show ownership

Possessive adjectives tell us who owns something.

Examples:

  • John is washing his car.

  • Maria is reading her book.

  • We invited friends to our party.

3. They match the person, not the object

The possessive adjective matches the owner, not the object.

Example:

  • Anna has a dog. Her dog is very playful.
    (Not: its dog)

Important Note: its vs it’s

  • its → possessive adjective

  • it’s → means it is

Examples:

  • The bird is building its nest.

  • It’s very cold today.
