Past Continuous

The Past Continuous Tense is used to talk about actions that were happening at a specific time in the past. It’s often used to describe what was going on when something else happened.

We use Past Continuous to talk about an action that was happening at a specific time in the past. It shows a long action in progress in the past.

When do we use Past Continuous?

1. Action in progress at a specific time

  • At 8 p.m., I was doing my homework.

  • She was driving to work at 7 a.m.

  • They were playing football at noon.

The action started before that time and continued after it.

2. Interrupted action (Past Continuous + Past Simple)

We use Past Continuous for the long action and Past Simple for the short action.

  • I was sleeping when the alarm rang.

  • She was cooking when the lights went out.

  • They were walking home when it started to rain.

3. Two actions happening at the same time

  • I was reading while my sister was listening to music.

  • We were studying while our parents were watching TV.


How to Form Past Continuous

1. Positive Sentences

Subject + was/were + verb + -ing

  • I was watching TV.

  • He was working late.

  • We were talking about you.

Use:

  • was → I, he, she, it

  • were → you, we, they

2. Negative Sentences

Subject + was not / were not + verb + -ing

  • I wasn’t sleeping.

  • She wasn’t paying attention.

  • They weren’t waiting for us.

Short forms:

  • was not = wasn’t

  • were not = weren’t

3. Questions

Was/Were + subject + verb + -ing?

  • Were you studying?

  • Was he working?

  • Were they laughing?

Wh-questions:

  • What were you doing?

  • Why was she crying?

  • Where were they going?


Time Expressions

Past Continuous is often used with:

  • at that moment

  • at 5 o’clock

  • while

  • when

  • all evening

  • all day

Examples:

  • At that moment, we were waiting for the bus.

  • She was working all afternoon.


Important Idea

Past Continuous = action in progress in the past

Past Simple = finished action

Compare:

  • I watched TV. (finished)

  • I was watching TV. (in progress at that time)
