Use the definite article The for specific things, unique items, places and locations, superlatives.

Definite Article “the”

In English, “the” is called a definite article. We use the when we talk about something specific or known.

1. Use the for something specific

When the listener knows which thing we mean:

  • Please close the door. (the door in this room)

  • I liked the movie we watched yesterday.

  • Where is the key?

2. Use the when we mention something again

  • I saw a dog in the park.

  • The dog was very friendly.

First time → a dog
Second time → the dog

3. Use the for unique things (only one)

  • The sun is shining.

  • The internet is slow today.

  • The world is changing.

4. Use the with superlatives

  • She is the youngest student in the class.

  • This is the most interesting book here.

  • That was the worst day ever.

5. Use the with rivers, oceans, and some countries

  • The Nile is very long.

  • The Atlantic Ocean is huge.

  • The United Kingdom is in Europe.

6. Use the with musical instruments

  • He plays the piano.

  • She is learning the violin.

When NOT to use “the”

Do not use the:

  • With names: Emma lives in Canada.

  • With general ideas: I love music.

  • With days and months: We met on Friday.
