Collective nouns are nouns that describe a group of people, animals, or things as one unit. Instead of naming each individual member, we use one word to talk about the whole group. They help make English clearer, shorter, and more natural.

1. What are collective nouns?

A collective noun refers to many individuals together.

Examples:

  • A team is training for the final.

  • A crowd is waiting outside the theatre.

  • A family lives in the house next door.

  • A class starts at nine o’clock.

Even though these words describe many people or things, they often act like one unit in a sentence.

2. Collective nouns for groups of people

Common examples:
