Used to

We use “used to” to talk about past habits or situations that were true in the past but are not true now. It tells us about something that happened regularly before, or a state that has changed.

When we use it

Past habits or repeated actions

  • We used to visit our grandparents every Sunday.

  • Tom used to go jogging before work.

Past states or facts

  • There used to be a cinema here.

  • I used to have long hair.

Don’t confuse with:

  • be used to + noun / -ing → means be familiar with something
    I’m used to getting up early. (It’s normal for me now.)

  • get used to + noun / -ing → means become familiar with something
    I’m getting used to my new job.
